Privacy Policy

Transparent data handling practices for typemind, designed with privacy at its core

IntroductionPrivacy First

typemind is a Chrome extension designed with privacy at its core. Our single purpose is to offer inline text-completion suggestions for the text you're currently typing. We believe in transparency, so this policy explains exactly how we handle your data (spoiler: we barely handle any).

Data We Handle

Typemind only processes the text you're actively typing when you invoke the extension. We don't collect, access, or process:

  • Your browsing history
  • Stored passwords or personal information
  • Content from other tabs or websites
  • Any data when the extension isn't actively being used
How We Use Data

Default Mode (On-Device)

Your text is processed entirely on your device using Chrome's built-in AI (Gemini Nano). Nothing leaves your computer.

OpenAI Mode (Optional)

If you explicitly enable the OpenAI option, only your currently typed text is sent over encrypted TLS to OpenAI to generate a suggestion. The text is immediately discarded after the suggestion is returned.

We never store, log, analyze, or reuse any of your text for any purpose.

Data Sharing
  • DefaultZero data sharing. Everything stays on your device.
  • OpenAIOnly when you explicitly enable it, your current text is sent to OpenAI solely for generating suggestions. No other third parties receive any data.
  • AnalyticsWe don't use analytics, tracking pixels, or any other data collection mechanisms.
Storage & Retention

All data storage is local to your device:

  • Your preferences (like provider choice) are stored locally using Chrome's storage API
  • Temporary suggestion cache (if any) remains on your device
  • No data is transmitted to or stored on our servers
  • Uninstalling the extension removes all stored preferences
User Controls

You have complete control:

  • Toggle between on-device and OpenAI processing
  • Disable OpenAI integration at any time
  • Uninstall the extension to remove all local data
  • The extension only runs when you actively invoke it
Security

We follow Chrome extension security best practices:

  • All UI elements use Shadow DOM isolation
  • No remote code execution or external script loading
  • Only bundled, reviewed code runs in the extension
  • Encrypted TLS for any external communication (OpenAI mode only)
  • Respect for abort signals to stop processing when needed
